Upstairs at Duroc JournalUpstairs at Duroc is an international literary and arts journal that promotes innovative English language writing from the Paris area and around the world. We publish both established and emerging writers.

Submitting to Upstairs at Duroc

Upstairs at Duroc is interested in English language poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and translations.  We welcome innovative or cross-genre forms, prose poems and flash fiction. Standalone excerpts from longer works will also be considered. Submit no more than 5 poems, or two prose pieces not exceeding 2000 words each.  Include cover sheet with name, address, phone number, email address, word count for prose, and a short Bio. Work is read anonymously by our Editorial Board.

  • Submission dates: We accept submissions from October 1 to January 31
  • Poetry submission: Submit up to five poems. Attach them in a single Word document, one poem per page.
  • Prose submissions: For short stories, send one or two pieces of no more than 2000 words each. Send up to five flash fiction pieces, attaching them in a single Word document, one piece per page.
  • Visual Art submissions: We seek drawings, etchings and photographs with good contrast. Mostly black/white, plus one color piece per issue (for the cover). Send artwork in jpeg format.

About the readers:

David Barnes grew up in Cholsey (UK), the village where Agatha Christie is buried. He won Shakespeare & Company’s Travel in Words competition in 2006 and has been published in Spot Lit Magazine and 34th Parallel. He lives in Paris, where he runs a writing workshop and the open mic series Spoken Word.

Joy Anna Becvarik grew up in New Mexico and now lives in Paris where she teaches, photographs and writes the food and culture blog The Tomato Knife.

Bob Levy has had work in literary magazines such as Other Voices, Flashpoints and Cottonwood, as well as in the Chicago Tribune and San Francisco Bay Guardian. He has received awards including the Langston Hughes Award in 2001, the Chicago Tribune Nelson Algren Award in 2001, The New Millennium Best Story Award and a Pushcart nomination.
