What do most of us know about the harp, an instrument dating back to pre-Antiquity?  And what could be more special than to hear about it from our instructor, a harpist herself who is  inviting a limited number of WICE music lovers to her own home where she will animate our class with live demonstrations.

We will hear how Queen Marie Antoinette, a harpist herself,  brought this angelic instrument back from several decades of obscurity, spurring enthusiastic luthiers to create so many different models that confusion reigned!  At the turn of the 20th century, French harpists called for a competition to retire all but one, and make that one the standard for both composers and harpists.  We will learn which harp won, and hear excerpts from the competition music by both Ravel and Debussy performed live on the winning model!

About the Instructor: As an American harpist, Lauren Woidela has travelled to three continents performing solo, chamber and orchestral concerts. As an instructor, she has given lectures for the musicology department of the Université de Paris-Sorbonne, focusing on 19th & 20th century music. She produced and hosted her own radio program for the former KXTR, Kansas City’s classical music radio station, captivating her audiences by bringing a fresh new view to classical music.
