"The Vegetarian" by Han Kang
Before the nightmare, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary life. But when splintering, blood-soaked images start haunting her thoughts, Yeong-hye decides to purge her mind and renounce eating meat. In a country where societal mores are strictly obeyed, Yeong-hye's decision to embrace a more “plant-like” existence is a shocking act of subversion. And as her passive rebellion manifests in ever more extreme and frightening forms, scandal, abuse, and estrangement begin to send Yeong-hye spiraling deep into the spaces of her fantasy. A disturbing, yet beautifully composed narrative told in three parts, The Vegetarian is an allegorical novel about modern day South Korea, but also a story of obsession, choice, and our faltering attempts to understand others, from one imprisoned body to another.

Avant le cauchemar, Yeong-hye et son mari mènent une vie complètement ordinaire. Mais, dès que les images fracassantes et ensanglantées commencent à hanter ses pensées, Yeong-hye se résout à faire une "purge" de son esprit et à renoncer à manger de la viande. Dans un pays où le conformisme social est tout, la décision de Yeong-hye de mener une existence comme une plante choque tout le monde. Sa rébellion passive va prendre des formes de plus en plus extrêmes et préoccupantes. Le scandale, l'abus, l'aliénation l'envoient au plus profond de sa fantaisie, vers la métamorphose complète du corps et de l'esprit -- un voyage aussi invraisemblable et ecstatique que tragique.
Un roman en trois parties qui interpelle tant par la beauté de sa composition que par sa capacité de déranger, La Végétarienne de Nan Kang, est une allégorie de la Corée du Sud contemporaine. Il est en même temps un récit sur l'obsession, sur la liberté du choix, sur l'incompréhension de l'Autre.
