TECHNOLOGY

About this Department

This is WICE's newest department, and it is a direct outgrowth of the shift to technology during the COVID crisis.

Our technology offering are centered around "Tech Wednesdays":

  • The 1st Wednesday of each month, WICE hosts an online group tech support session where members can bring individual technology issues they would like some help with.
  • The 2nd Wednesday of each month, a WICE instructor will provide an online class about some aspect of the daily technologies we all use.
  • The 3rd Wednesday of each month, WICE organizes and hosts an online Paris Wild Apricot User Group Meetup.

In the autumn, WICE plans to introduce a 4th Wednesday talk series that will help WICE members understand some of the advanced technologies we are hearing so much about——e.g., artificial intelligence, gene editing, renewable energies, etc.——and what some of the issues are.

All of these offerings are free for WICE members.

Additionally, WICE offers private tech support visits to your home. Find out more: Private Tech Support Visits.

Your tech questions answered for free!

Do you have trouble with Zoom? Don't understand cookies? Confused by the WICE website? Like to know how to connect to a printer using your phone's bluetooth/hotspot as Wifi? Like to share your screen during a Zoom meeting?

You can get help with all your technology problems from the friendly and knowledgeable WICE tech team.

In this program, WICE volunteers Jonathan Weiland, Mike Franks, and Dania Lawand will host an online tech support session exclusively for WICE members.

Here’s your chance to feel more comfortable with your tech devices and get answers to your specific questions for free.

These sessions, on Zoom, will have three parts:

    1.    The tech team will cover a few general topics like how to update Zoom (a must-do) and how to sign up for an event on the WICE website.

    2.    Team members will answer questions that have been submitted in advance. (You can email your questions/problems to techquestions@wice-paris.org, or you can include them when you register.)

    3.    Q and A session with Zoom participants.

These talks will be informal, about an hour long. We plan to have them regularly, about once a month on the first Wednesday.

Disclaimer: This is advice only and to the best of our volunteers’ ability.  WICE does not guarantee results and is not responsible for any damages to personal devices that may occur.

Again, Tech Talk is free but you must register to participate. Send your questions to techquestions@wice-paris.org, and be sure to register!

The average iPhone has more computing power than scientists had when designing the atomic bomb. And yet many people are unaware of the huge number of features their iPhone can provide.

In this class, we will unlock the doors to some of the iPhones most useful—but often overlooked—features, such as notifications, . . .

Free for WICE members, but registration is required.

The class will be in the American Legion office at 24 Boulevard Diderot, 75012. Specific directions for getting into the building will be provided by separate email.

Rick Jones has a Masters of Science in Information Technology Management from George Washington University. Since graduating in 2002, he has held a number of technology development positions at various U.S. government and commercial organizations. He has been living in France since July 2018.

If Time Magazine names ChatGPT its "Person of the Year" the next time around, it won't really be a surprise to anyone who's been following the news.

ChatGPT—a popular artificial intelligence entity—has been taking the world by storm. It's used by lawyers to write briefs, programmers to write computer code, marketing departments to write copy, and even the President of WICE uses it to write such things as this event description. So what is it, and how does it work?

In this online class we will discuss the statistical foundations of artificial intelligence (AI) in a way anyone can understand. Then we will move on to large language models, which is the family of AI to which ChatGPT belongs. Finally, we will demonstrate ChatGPT and show attendees how they, too, can use it (both in basic modes and in advanced modes).

Free for WICE members, but registration is required. A Zoom link will be sent before the class.

    Registration opens 01 September 2023.
