Jan OlssonThis year’s fall series of 3-week drawing classes at WICE begins with sketching at venues around Paris until cool weather arrives. Classes will then move indoors to Jan Olsson’s spacious private studio downriver from the Eiffel Tower.

Drawing enhances one’s power of observation and is accessible to all with instruction and practice. Even experienced artists must draw frequently to keep and develop their skills. Jan’s lessons include a variety of techniques and approaches to drawing. She offers a guiding hand without judgement in a convivial atmosphere conducive to nurturing her students’ creativity.

Activities in this class will include:

  • Using a viewfinder to select a subject and frame a composition
  • Identifying one’s viewpoint and simple perspective clues
  • Additional techniques for achieving depth
  • Shading techniques with pen and pencil
  • Using shape to organize a complex scene
  • Line drawing to capture the essence of a subject with a few select details

Students supply their own sketchbook, pencils, pens and markers for drawing outside the studio. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

This class is open to beginners as well as those with more experience. It is ideal for those who would like to visit and record their observations of various locations in Paris and would enjoy drawing with a group.

About the instructor: Prior to settling in Paris, Jan Olsson was awarded the Professional Fellowship in Painting from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  Her paintings have been exhibited in Paris’ most competitive juried exhibitions and are included in both private and museum collections.  Visit her professional website and teaching blog.
