CREATIVITY THROUGH MOVEMENT
In this 45-minute session, dancer and movement educator Hiie Saumaa, PhD, will take you on a journey of exploring creativity and kinetic imagination through movement. The session will start with a brief introduction to somatics, which is an umbrella term for physical awareness practices that emphasize participants' felt experience with movement. We will then do a 30-minute movement exploration using the somatic technique of Nia dance. Nia, developed in the 1980s in the US, is a mind-body method that combines dance, martial arts, and healing arts. It blends easy to follow choreography and free dance. Our focus will be on finding freedom through movement: this freedom of movement has the potential to increase our creativity and aliveness in our artistic practice and other realms of life.
Please wear comfortable exercise clothes. Barefoot is preferred but it depends on the surface you are moving on. Previous dance experience is not necessary.
