As you stroll through Paris, how often have you stopped to admire the many sculpted angels which adorn the city’s doorways and monuments?

Rosemary Flannery, author and photographer, will lead you through a fascinating on-line tour to view extraordinary angels in architecture: carved in stone, imaged in mosaic, cast in bronze, painted on panels and sculpted in sandstone throughout the city. Appearing from the time of the Crusades to the 20th century, the angels reflect every artistic movement – from Gothic to Renaissance, to Rococo and the Second Empire to Art Nouveau, Art Deco and more. You will tour virtually the streets of Paris, viewing the creations of renowned artisans and sculptors on monuments, chapels, sundials, lightning rods, carriage doors and opera steps. The angels are part of the visual poetry of Paris, and tell the history of the city along with the stories of the kings, queens and architects who commissioned them.

Part 1: Artistic styles in sculpture and architecture in Paris from the Middle Ages to Louis XIV and Louis XV; changes wrought due to the French Revolution; the First Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte and reconstruction under Louis-Philippe and the July monarchy

Rosemary Flannery, an American in Paris, has been part of the scene here since 1989. Passionate about art and architecture, she has worked as a tour guide, produced an internet radio show on the arts, and is also an artist. Walking through the streets of the city, she noticed angels depicted in the most unexpected places, echoing her impression that enchanting Paris is an enchanted city. Her research reveals fascinating information about Parisian architecture and history, which she loves sharing through her tours, lectures and her book: The Angels of Paris: An architectural tour through the history of Paris (The Little Bookroom NYC, 2012) ; Les Anges de Paris: un voyage architectural au coeur de Paris (Editions Guy Tredaniel, 2015).
