The General of the Dead Army is Ismail Kadaré’s best-known novel, a moving and timely meditation on war and its consequences that established him as a leading literary figure worldwide.

It tells the story of an Italian general in the company of a quarrelsome priest on a mission to recover the remains of his soldiers, who had fallen some 20 years earlier.

In 1996 Kadaré became a lifetime member of France’s Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques and in 2005 won the inaugural Man Booker International Prize.

Kadaré is ‘a universal writer in the tradition of storytelling that goes back to Homer.’ John Carey, Committee Chair, Man Booker International Prize 2005

‘Kadaré has been compared to Kafka and Orwell, but his is an original voice, at once universal and deeply rooted in his own soil.’ The Paris Review.
