What do the words “42nd Street”conjure up in your mind’s eye?
Gone are the genteel Schrafft’s tea rooms, the Automats where you stuck a couple of nickels in a window slot and out popped a sandwich or a cake. Gone also is Crystal Palace, where a version of the first World’s Fair was held.
In their place, one now finds intimate experimental theatres, gleaming condominiums with basketball courts, swimming pools, inner gardens and free breakfasts, all part of what’s new in recent years.
Learn about all of this and much more in our block-by-block, past-to- present, online visit of this amazing thoroughfare, so often celebrated in song, film, musicals and literature.
