It all started with the music!

Today, what we understand as street art began in the 1960s in Philadelphia and New York with Hip-Hop: MC’ing, DJ’ing, breakdancing, and graffiti.

Street art is an outgrowth of graffiti writing (in the US, people who create graffiti are writers; in France, they are graffeurs). Among the  “founders” of this ephemeral art form were Cornbread (now  in his late 60s and still alive in Philly),the multi-talented Keith Haring (who was 32 years old when he died of AIDS-related complications), as well as Jean-Michel Basquiat, an equally brilliant and rebellious artist who died from a heroin overdose at the age of  27.  Another American graffeur who took the name Kool Koor is now a very talented, successful artist who has made his home in  Brussels.

Though graffiti on the walls of Paris goes back a ways in time, it’s probably safe to say that what’s now considered Street Art started in the early 80’s.  In this 2-part presentation, you’ll discover the history of street art in Paris through a hybrid lecture, and then “live” as your instructor invites you to wander a Paris neighborhood viewing  street art on the walls and (maybe) in galleries.

About the Instructor: Creative from a young age,  Deborah Gallin grew up in Southern California amid Scandinavian furniture and contemporary art. Having obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications from the University of California, Davis, she went from being a freelance writer in San Francisco and New York to managing international corporate communications & marketing at the executive level in Paris for French technology companies. A major incident in her life in 2015 led to her simultaneously completing two master’s degrees from universities in Paris in Art & Culture Management with an emphasis on visual art. This set the stage for founding Art Works Internationally, the outgrowth of her passion where she promotes street artists in Europe, North America, and the African continent.
