Course Description:

One of the most important ways to learn photography is to visit exhibitions and photo bookshops. We will explore the exhibits at the La Bal museum. Join us as we view and discuss the exhibition  "À partir d'elle. Des artistes et leur mère".

From the Le BAL website:

"LE BAL presents an exhibition dedicated to the views taken by 25 artists on their mothers. The chosen body of work, which extends from the 1960s to the present day, covers the work of Sophie Calle, Christian Boltanski, Michel Journiac, Anri Sala and Lebohang Kganye. Going beyond the pure testimony of an inevitably singular intimate relationship, these works are constructed from formal and conceptual devices involving the body, the figure or the character of the mother in the creative process. Whether they seek to embody the reality of presence or the effects of absence, all have in common that they consider filiation as a way of rethinking archetypal relationships, between social criticism, self-quest, conjuring or appeasement".

After the exhibition we will have a feedback session in a café.

  • Analyzing the artist’s work and how they use the photography medium.
  • Participating in a friendly feedback session after the exhibition

About the Instructor

Juan Manuel Abellán is a professional fine art photographer and photography tutor based in Paris since 2007. He graduated in Advertising and Visual Arts and holds a Master in Art, Philosophy and Aesthetics, specializing in Photography and Contemporary Art. He has worked with the agency Magnum Photo and exhibited his work in several exhibitions, including the Centre Georges Pompidou. Passionate about photography, Juan Manuel works as a freelance photographer specializing in portrait, reportage and fine art photography. He also leads photography adventure tours around the world.
