The Butte aux Cailles is not a typical Paris neighborhood. In fact, this corner of the capital, situated in the 13th arrondissement, does not resemble any other quartier, with its small houses on quiet and twisty lanes. Built on what were originally limestone quarries, this industrial activity has now ceased, as have the dyeworks, tanneries and laundries which characterized this area. The Bièvre river is just a distant memory. Today, the Butte aux Cailles is a peaceful quartier, on a human scale, which rewards a stroll during fine weather.

On this walk, you will see some of the street art which flourishes in the area, private houses and gardens in hidden lanes, learn about the area’s role in the Commune, and why a neighborhood was once called Little Russia, among other discoveries.

The route will include some hilly streets and the surface might be unevenly paved.

This walk is conducted by Paris Greeters. Paris Greeters is a volunteer-led walking organization that brings visitors and local people together for a different experience. Walk leaders live in the neighborhoods they walk and give a personalized and offbeat view of the city.

The walk is free of charge but a 10€ donation to Paris Greeters is requested.

Registration opens on 23rd September 2024.
