Light is the foundation of photography—both an art and a science. Exploring how this essential element plays a role in making photographs is key to dramatic and compelling images. This two-session workshop will deepen your knowledge of light’s qualities and give you practical tools to enhance your photography.

Anyone who would like to stay after class for a social lunch (and further discussion) is welcome. All levels and all types of cameras welcome.

What to Expect:

The workshop will consist of two parts: an introduction lecture/discussion featuring practical information, a review of the work of notable photographers, and creative outdoor practice guided by the instructor. Two weeks later, we will meet again physically or online for a review of the images created in response to the assignment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding Light – Learn how different lighting conditions affect your photos, from the amount and direction of light to how color temperature impacts mood.
  • The Magic Hours – Explore how Golden Hour, Blue Hour, and other lighting techniques can add drama and depth to your compositions.
  • Creative Techniques – Experiment with both natural and artificial light, including High-Key and Low-Key lighting approaches.
  • Hands-on Practice – Apply what you learn through guided exercises, capturing images indoors and outdoors.

    Course Requirements:

    • Open to all levels—beginners and experienced photographers alike.
    • Any type of camera is welcome, including smartphones.

Session 1: Tuesday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on May 6.

      Session 2 (Assignment Review)Tuesday, 10:00 am to 11:30 am on May 20.
