Cimitière du Calvaire is the smallest — and some say the oldest — of all Parisian cemeteries. It is located at the top of Montmartre, next to Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre (and just a few steps from Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre).

The cemetery is mainly home to members of the great aristocratic families of lower Montmartre (now the 9th arrondissement) who returned from emigration, but it also contains a few graves of residents of “upper Montmartre.” Currently, only the descendants of those buried there can still be buried there.

It is only open to the public one day a year: La Toussaint.

As a general rule, visitors on La Toussaint are taken through the cemetery in small groups, led by a French guide.

The current concept is that a WICE group of eight will meet outside and go in as a group. We will ask one of our French members to accompany us to explain, in English, what the guide is saying. If there is enough interest, we will have two groups.

This is a free event, and registration will open on Monday, 06 October.

Additional details will be posted as we get closer to the event date.
