Course Description 

A beautiful portrait can give us insight into the expression, personality, and mood of a subject. The focus is usually on the face but context and background may be included.

This course offers participants a special understanding of professional portraiture by analyzing the great figures of the contemporary scene. You’ll get practical advice on applying lighting techniques. A review and suggestions for your images will follow.

Students can expect to:

  • Learn the keys to portraiture photography
  • Learn about lighting techniques
  • Get hands-on experience with practical assignments
  • Participate in a friendly critique of their work

Course Requirements

  • Participants are to bring a camera that can manually set ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, and/or are able to set a manual mode
  • A lens of approximately 50mm full frame is highly recommended
  • Suitable for all levels of photographers

About the Instructor

Juan Manuel Abellán graduated in advertising and completed his training as a photographer in Barcelona at the Institute of Design and Image (IDEP) where he worked with Italian photographer Luca Pagliari. Juan Manuel has worked in advertising agencies in London, such as Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann-Ericksson, and Grey Worldwide. He then moved to Paris, where he became the assistant to photographers such as Laure Vasconi, Xavier Lucchesi, and Ariadna Bufi. He has collaborated with Tendance Floue, and has worked for Daylight Photo Studio and the agency Magnum Photos. Juan Manuel currently lives and works in Paris as a freelance photographer.
