WICE's Lifestyles program offers a diverse range of activities to cater to varied interests. Whether you're looking to engage your mind with games like mahjong and bridge, explore hands-on crafts such as knitting, stimulate your palate with wine and cheese tastings, or focus on physical wellness through yoga and Pilates, there's something for everyone. Beyond the activities themselves, one of the underlying joys of this program is the chance it provides to meet new people and forge lasting friendships. The gatherings serve as a nexus for members to connect, share experiences, and bond over shared passions and interests.

We recognize the importance of both traditional activities and contemporary interests. That's why you'll find offerings like the French game of pétanque alongside modern fitness routines. The program is flexible, adapting to the evolving interests of our members by introducing new classes and events while maintaining established mainstays.

With the Lifestyles program, WICE aims not only to provide members with opportunities to relax and learn new skills but also to foster a vibrant community where connections are made, and friendships flourish.

You can be kept abreast of this by subscribing to our newsletter, WICE Direct, following our FaceBook page, or by simply keeping an eye on this page.

The weather is back, and so is pétanque!

In the same way that—to some people—lobster is just an excuse to eat melted butter, WICE's afternoon pétanque games can be thought of as an excuse to hang out in a charming locale and have fun with other WICE members.

We play at the Jardins Luxembourg from 2:30 pm until the last person decides to leave. A game usually takes about an hour, and generally everyone wanders over to one of the nearby cafés afterwards for beverages and a chat. The courts are located behind the Senate Building on Rue de Vaugirard near the playground and tennis courts (see image).

WICE provides four pétanque sets, and—if you're new—instructions on how to play.

The session is free for WICE members, but registration is required, and the registration limit is eight people. If the session is full, please join the waiting list so that we can better plan future sessions.

Look for Jo Jones (left), one of WICE's most seasoned pétanque players, who will be organizing the game:

Can you imagine a life where your mind is a source of peace and strength, where calmness flows through you like a gentle river even amidst daily challenges? What if you had the power to observe your thoughts without judgement, steady your emotions, and tap into a deeper well of wisdom within yourself?

Meditation is a grounding practice that can help you to know yourself better, as well as appreciating yourself and others more.  Regular practice can help your body regulate itself more effectively.  For example, it can help with getting a more relaxed and sound sleep or decreasing the severity and/or frequency of migraine headaches.  It’s a path toward true mental clarity, emotional resilience, and enriched creativity.

Join us for an hour of vipassana meditation practice.  Vipassana is a mindfulness practice, which focuses on direct observation of sensations in the body to cultivate self-awareness and mindfulness.  It is practiced as a non-sectarian technique, open to anyone seeking to understand the nature of their mind and body.  We’ll do a few minutes of self-introduction, followed by 15 minutes of guided meditation.  Then we’ll do 30 minutes of silent practice, followed by 15 minutes of conversational reflection.  Whatever level you are, beginner to advanced, you are welcome! Hosted by Lori Zeller, who has been meditating on and off for over 40 years, all the while taking classes, joining groups and going to retreats.

In this first WICE Online Knowledge Sharing session, a panel of 5 - 7 WICE members will answer 12 questions that were posed by other WICE members. These questions all relate to living in Paris, and range from medical issues to residency issues to education issues and more. You can see the questions here:

    WICE Online Knowledge Sharing Session

We anticipate transcribing the session and posting it for all WICE members to benefit. If this goes well, we are currently thinking that we might do it once every three months.

Registration opens Tuesday, 01 April 2025.
